INTRODUCTION: Hello, my name is Alex Schmacht, and I’m the Alumni Relations Officer for 2024-25. My advisor, Josh Calhoun, and I are trying to strengthen our relations with the Theta Kappa chapter alumni. One such way we hope to do that is by providing this newsletter to highlight important dates and accomplishments made by the chapter. We know it’s hard to plan around work, so we hope that by providing you all with dates of important events, we can see the alumni attendance grow. During my term, I hope to get to know every one of you and see you at the events we highlight or at least a couple of them. One of my goals as this year's officer is to reach out to each of during my term, so feel free to reach out to me as well.

SUMMARY: Over the past year, Theta Kappa continues to thrive and improve dramatically, both with internal and external efforts. We are now at Theta Kappa 1188 with our Spring 2025 candidate class of 7 new men. In the fall we worked hard to recruit 25 outstanding men, so an increase of 32 for the year. Those new members have tried to quickly showcase their commitment to the chapter by volunteering for sorority events and dances and even putting together a couple of events. With 32 new brothers, we find Sigma Nu in a great spot at GSU with 107 active brothers. We believe in the fall we can recruit similar numbers, if not more, quality candidates that uphold the Sigma Nu pillars. Our two Recruitment chairs, Logan Barnes (1141) and Lance ReDavid (1159), have already begun efforts for next year's Fall rush and are planning events in the summer to find recruits. It’s inevitable, but we do have 14 members ending their collegiate years with graduation in the Spring and 2 more in the fall, so we’’ return in the fall with 93.

Overall, we have been incredibly impressed with our newest members, and we are excited to take this new momentum into the next academic year as we strive to reach at least 120 members in our fall semester, and that will be one of the largest numbers this chapter has seen in a while. In addition to our increasing membership numbers, we have succeeded in our philanthropic efforts. We placed among the top three chapters in multiple campus philanthropic events, and it seems to be becoming a stronger, better chapter day by day.

ACADEMIC: For the Fall academic semester, we had a new chapter accomplishment with one of the highest GPAs on record, and one of the highest on row with a 3.09 overall GPA for the chapter. Last Spring we had a 3.08, so we’re on a trend and great track. This Spring semester isn’t over yet, but we plan to have a high overall GPA, which has been traditionally higher in the Spring semester.

This year we added a CAREER DEVELOPMENT aspect to help guide brothers achieve enhanced career success and get an advanced start at work, through our inaugural Industry Advancement Weekend for Construction careers. For this weekend, alumni from our chapter came back to share their personal experiences and knowledge in their construction fields with members majoring in construction management. This advancement weekend was a trial to see how it would go, and since it went great, we hope to expand to business majors this coming school year.

ATHLETICS: This year, we have excelled in most sports. Some of the accomplishments: we placed 2nd in Fraternity Basketball, and didn’t lose a single game until the final. We won the fraternity volleyball championship, placing 1st. We then won both ΦΜ and AΩΠ’s volleyball tournaments, beating Sigma Chi in the ΦΜ tournament and SAE in the AΩΠ tournament, so those wins were especially sweet. We recently won the 4v4 Flag football championship.

PHILANTHROPY: This year, we have done great with bringing in new ideas for our philanthropy, which is still focused on suicide prevention. Last year's philanthropy chair, Peyton McMillan (1073), did an excellent job for our white rose week in the fall and ended the week with a yacht-themed party to thank everyone for showing up this important philanthropy. Our 2024-25 Philanthropy Chair, Jack Teachworth (1129), is an affiliate from LSU who has brought new ideas to the table furthering our philanthropy efforts day by day. Some events Jack has already planned were a Chili cookoff with AΔΠ in January and has planned a percentage night this week with ΧΩ at Del Sur.

BROTHERHOOD: Here’s a quick update from our 2025 Brotherhood Chair, Thomas Maloney (1108), to improve brotherhood and strengthen the bonds between brothers as we continue to grow. He says they’re many plans & goals to accomplish this next semester, such as more grilling out at the house and corn hole tournaments can be a great way for us to get together and have a good time. We are setting up brotherhood and sisterhood events with sororities, which will be a new thing, but in the long run will improve our relations with sororities, in the Greek community, and a great representation to Georgia Southern. Overall, I would like to just have simpler events where everyone just gets together and hangs out. We’ve already done several large tournaments for cornhole, dye, and basketball.

  • Thomas also said, “we’re also planning brotherhood events in the Burkhalter area at that involve baseball and other activities. Other than that, my goal for my term is to bring this chapter and the brothers closer together.”

    IMPORTANT EVENTS:

55th ANNIVERSARY: Some of the events to look out for are the 55th Anniversary Reception, which May 17, 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm in Atlanta. It is at Dr. Scofflaw’s @ The Works, 214 Chattahoochee Row NW, Atlanta, GA 30318 in West Midtown.

BRAVES TAILGATE: After that we will be gearing up for fall recruitment with a Braves tailgate on June 28th at Truist Park and we will setup an event on Facebook with our exact location. This is something we do each year to introduce Sigma Nu to new rushees and bring the brothers together in the summer. We highly encourage anyone who lives in Atlanta to come on by and meet some of the active brothers and maybe even talk to some of the recruits. For the older guys and people above 21, we plan on going to the Battery after the game is over and having a couple of drinks, so if you have time, feel free to stick around. For more details on that, feel free to reach out.

GRAND CHAPTER: We are looking forward to the 71st Grand Chapter in San Antonio, TX, where Mac Broome and I plan to receive a rock chapter from Regent Maury Gaston. The dates for that are July 23-26.

HOMECOMING 2025: The next big date is Homecoming 2025, which is Oct. 17-19, which is big for alumni and the chapter. This year, we are teaming with AΩΠ, so we will be tabling and trying to get our candidates in the spotlight so that they can win homecoming. The homecoming game and the weekend that y’all would need to plan for and we are excited to see everyone plus we know the Alumni Chapter is planning some special activities. The Homecoming game is against our Sun Belt rival Georgia State. Those are our major dates but remember we will host a Tailgate cookout/event each Home Game, so join us for that and I’m sure we will have more dates popping up, so keep a lookout on our Facebook or website at: www.sigmanugsu.com/homecoming.

COMMANDERS DINNER: This year, Theta Kappa celebrated our 11th Commander's Dinner for the newest and our 55th Commander of Theta Kappa, Mac Broome (1102).  This was a special dinner because we were honored to welcome the 68th Regent of Sigma Nu, Brother Maury Gaston (Auburn). One thing that we would like to highlight from that day is what we are striving to achieve this year as a fraternity. Over the last year, this chapter has worked tirelessly to become better, to improve, to strive for excellence, and our goal in mind is to win the Rock Chapter, returning to that coveted status earned in 2016 & 2018. During his remarks at the dinner, Mr. Maury lit a fire under our asses when he said, “I hope to hand Commander Broome and other Theta Kappa representatives a Rock Chapter certificate at Grand Chapter in San Antonio, but whether I do is up to you!” That left us with a goal for the new elected, excited executive team to achieve that goal this summer and bring Rock Chapter status back to Theta Kappa.
